"Every email, API request, Docker image pull, Kubernetes deployment, and AWS console action begins as electrical, optical, or radio signals moving across a physical medium."
Learning Objectives
By the end of this chapter, you should be able to:
- Explain the purpose of the Physical Layer (Layer 1).
- Understand how binary data is transmitted across physical media.
- Differentiate between electrical, optical, and radio transmission.
- Identify common networking cables and connectors.
- Explain how Network Interface Cards (NICs) work.
- Describe the purpose of hubs and repeaters.
- Understand physical network topologies.
- Explain bandwidth, latency, and throughput.
- Recognize the physical networking infrastructure used in modern cloud data centers.
Introduction
When you open a website, stream a video, or deploy an application to AWS, the data eventually becomes something surprisingly simple:
A stream of 1s and 0s.
Computers understand only binary.
However, binary cannot travel through a cable by itself.
It must be converted into a physical signal.
